Our Case Managers are not clinical mental health providers. Therefore, it is important to know, when working with our staff, that the information shared is not confidential in the same way as information you may share with a mental health treatment provider. What you share is always kept private, and communication with the Case Manager is governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This means information can be shared with other individuals who work at the school and whom have a need to know and to entities outside the institution under specific circumstances if there is a health and safety emergency: harm to self, harm to others, harm to a child or dependent or disabled person.
WashU Cares Case Managers work closely with the school’s Care and Concern Team. This team is a group of interdisciplinary professionals who meet to coordinate services for students experiencing barriers or distress. In some cases, your case manager may share information with this team to assess concerns and coordinate resources to address those concerns. Additionally, case managers are mandated reporters (or responsible employees) under Title IX. This means that case managers must disclose information related to incidents of sex/gender discrimination to the Title IX Office. The school does have other staff who are confidential employees available through The Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention Center, Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Director of Religious, Spiritual, and Ethical Life. Please ask your case manager for more information about confidential resources.
