FAQ’s

Does the student health insurance plan cover pregnancy related care?

The plan is putting together a resource packet that highlights the related benefits for this population. Please reach out to studentinsurance@wustl.edu

Does the student health insurance plan cover babies/children?

Yes, a student can elect to add their baby to the SHIP as a dependent. This is a qualifying event.

The Student Health Center does not see or treat dependents (spouse or children.) The only exception is that CCPS will see couples for counseling. Couples counseling is included in the 9 free sessions for students who pay the Health and Wellbeing fee. The SHIP is in network for the BJC and SSM health systems for off campus care and dependents.

Does Student Health provide pregnancy care? If so, all or only some?

The Student Health Center provides GYN care, but once pregnancy has been diagnosed, students are then referred to BJC OBGYN. In rare cases, Student Health may perform emergency deliveries.

Is someone at CCPS/RSVP trained in perinatal or postpartum mental health?

CCPS/RSVP do not have clinicians who specialize in this field.

Is it possible to make arrangements with professors if it is necessary to miss class?

Yes. Title IX staff is available to help you navigate accessing reasonable modifications. Staff will meet with you to determine what options are the best fit for you. Title IX staff can speak to professors about absences, help you locate lactation spaces, help you receive an accessible desk, provide referrals to resources for health care and financial assistance, and determine what, if any, paperwork is required – among many other options.

What if I need to take time away from the university?

Students can take a personal Leave of Absence (LOA) through their respective school/program. A Medical Leave of Absence (MLOA) is only approved for pregnancy if there is a medical complication during or after birth. Pregnancy alone is not considered a medical condition that meets criteria for MLOA. International students should consult with OISS and WashU Cares to determine potential impacts on student VISA status before applying for any type of leave.

Can I live in WashU ResLife housing while pregnant?

Yes. Pregnant students may continue to live in their residence halls until their babies are born.

Are there designated lactation areas on campus?

Yes.
